Chapter Twenty-Three

When Didier arrived the next day to pick up Creole, he dropped off Fab, and the two of us went out to the deck.

“I took all your suggestions,” she said. “Or most of them anyway.”

“Are you feeling okay?”

Fab rolled her eyes. “I called Gunz and asked him to contact Watusi about her friend Resin, and sooner would be better. Shortly after that, which surprised me, he called back with her sister’s name, Dylan, and with Xander’s help, I got a number for her.”

“That’s great.”

“Don’t get too excited,” Fab gritted with frustration. “They aren’t close. Dylan was sorry to hear about her sister being in the hospital but wasn’t willing to get involved. And even added, ‘Don’t tell Resin that we spoke.’”

“Whatever went down between the two must’ve been huge.”

“Dylan couldn’t get off the call fast enough. I managed to get in one last question before she banged the phone down— ‘Any other relatives?’ The answer was a curt, ‘No.’”

“You can always call your buddy Gunz back and hit him up—”

“Done. I struggled not to whine, as I’d had enough, and the only thing that stopped me was the smirk on Didier’s face where he sat opposite me. After I got off the phone, I told him it was rude to eavesdrop, and I didn’t think he’d ever stop laughing.”

“And let me guess: Gunz said, ‘Anything you want, hon.’” I tried to mimic his voice and came up woefully short.

“Told me to call Rollo, and he’d make it happen, which surprised me. Turns out that when Rollo joined Gunz for a beer for the interview, it was some kind of love-fest… or so it sounded anyway. Thanked me for recommending him, and I took the credit.”

“If it got you what you needed…”

“One more thing. I can’t deal with Resin—”

“Absolutely not.”

“Would you let me finish? You’re going to like this one… well, maybe. I appropriated one of your employees.”

“If I did this to you, you’d flip… except you don’t have employees.”

“I hired Rude. She assured me it wouldn’t interfere with her job at Cove. She’s going to go to the hospital every day and get friendly with Resin. I told her everything that happened and sent her a list of questions I’d like answers to.”

I tried not to laugh. “You do know that as soon as you hung up, Rude jumped up and was out the door for her first visit.”

“Pretty much.” Fab grinned. “You’ve got to admit that she’s got a way of getting information out of people without them feeling like she’s digging through their lint.”

“I’ve seen her in action before. She’s good at getting people to trust her and will get you your answers.”

Fab got up, got herself a bottled water, and held up one for me. I nodded.

“Is Rude going to pass herself off as a family member? Friend?”

“She’s going with new friend. How she’s going to pull that off, I didn’t ask.”

“Look at you, all helpful. I’m rubbing off on you.”

“You need to stop it too,” Fab groaned.
